  17. <p>    His face obscured by a helmet, a dark figure climbed off his
  18. motorcycle and strode toward a house in a village outside
  19. Bayonne in southwest France. Before he reached the door,
  20. gunfire erupted, and within minutes French authorities captured
  21. the notorious leader of the Basque hard-liners, Jose Antonio
  22. Urrutikoetxea (alias: Josu Ternera), 38. The arrest last week of
  23. the ETA (Basque Homeland and Liberty) terrorist was hailed as
  24. a major breakthrough in a three-year Franco-Spanish offensive
  25. against Basque extremists fighting for independence in Spain.

  27. <p>    Josu Ternera is thought to have been responsible for the
  28. assassination of the Spanish Prime Minister in 1973. Police
  29. believe the arrests will seriously curtail the terrorist
  30. activities of ETA.
